Love Soaring Duck

My favorite animal to stuff is a duck, because you can do so much with the wings, position them so it seems as if the duck has just taken off, or as if it is preparing to land, or perhaps just soaring -- the best is when you can simulate soaring, because ducks don't move when they are soaring, so it looks the most real, and it's nice to see a duck, soaring constantly forever.

You can mold a duck the way you can't mold land-roaming mammals.

What are other people's favorite animals to stuff? Leave answers in the comments...

GREAT AUTUMNAL TAXIDERMY GET-TOGETHER

(As reported in Issue 2006-10-30 of The New Yorker)

Last fall, in conjunction with the publication of their book “Carnivorous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger,” the authors Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson organized a taxidermy contest at Pete’s Candy Store, a bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They’ve decided to do it again this year in a new location, with a few changes. Mittelbach and Crewdson will be hosting, and the judging of all things stuffed and preserved will be done by Dorian Devins, a radio producer with an interest in science, and Rob Marbury, of the Minneapolis Association of Rogue Taxidermy. Animals on display at last year’s event included a mongoose (entwined with a cobra), an armadillo (being used as a handbag), and a crow (dubbed Poe). The contest drew people from all over the metropolitan region, from employees of the Parks Department and the American Museum of Natural History to professional taxidermists and “various other types,” according to Devins, who participated. “I don’t know how they found out about it, but they all just showed up with their things.” (Union Hall, 702 Union St., Park Slope, Brooklyn. No tickets necessary. Oct. 28 at 8, with a master class and game tasting with a vegan option led by the M.A.R.T.’s Marbury, starting at 5. To sign up for the class, e-mail info@roguetaxidermy.com.)

Trophy Museum

Wouldn't it be great if instead of Madame Toussad's, it was Madame Dermigirl's?

Think about it.

Taxidmery Tail

My office received a call yesterday from a guy who wants to have his cat's tail preserved. The cat is still alive, but lost her tail in an unfortunate garlic chopping incident in the caller's kitchen. The cat is one of those white fluffy things with a huge fluffy tail. The tail is (was) reportedly this particular cat's best feature, pristinely aqua blue eyes notwithstanding. The caller said that he wants to hang the preserved tail on the wall, most of the time. But he wants have it fitted so that on certain occasions, particularly when guests are over, the cat can wear the tail and be restored to her former grandeur.

So true:

Taxidermy in the latter part of the twentieth century has developed into a full-fledged form of wildlife art, and the successful taxidermists of today must also be considered as fine artists in their own right.

Reno or bust! Join the Caribou Caravan!!

The bi-annual WTC (World Taxidermy Championships, for those of you living in a cave!) is officially only 6 months away....it's time to start planning! Springfield was great in '05, but the WTC is doin' it right in '07 with Reno, baby. The uber-cool Silver Legacy will be our host for those overly-"stuffed" (lol) days. If you can't commit to the entire week, be sure to make it by Friday for the awards show and banquet (extra T-Me points for anyone who eats their weight in meat throughout the championships) and don't miss the wind-down party on Saturday - (Jim, no antler wrestling this year!! lol!!!).

I'm organizing a Caribou Caravan that will leave NYC Monday and return Sunday. Let me know ASAP how many will be joining us...I'll come stocked with the latest Queenadreena tunes and, of course, a bottomless supply of jerky!

Let's get serious about WTC '07 and make Reno shout, "TaxiderME" next April!

Holla soon......
